A birth pool with a puncture

Where did you give birth or where was the birth you witnessed?

Read, Lancashire

Can you describe where your/the birth was?

I gave birth to both my children at home in a birthing pool. My husband with with me. I had 2 wonderful midwives. Sue, the main midwife, delivered both my children… its the only time I’ve ever seen her… she was the angel that appeared to birth both my babies. Both were born around 6.30 am on a Sunday morning in our birth pool with a puncture

Who was present at your/the birth?

Me! My husband. 2 midwifes. For my son’s birth the second midwife had never had a home birth before.

Can you describe the experience of giving birth or watching the birth?

My daughters birth… my first…
It was good to be at home… quiet, my own environment, all went to plan. The water really helped with pain relief and it was great to get into the pool. Previously I’d been using a TENS machine for the pain. Labour lasted around 8 hours. I remember thinking right at the end as I pushed her head out… ‘this is barbaric… that women still have to do this’ … but of course I’d chosen a home birth, water, gas and air for pain relief… I chose it to be that way! She was born without any assistance into the water… it felt like she swam out. The midwives allowed nature to birth and only brought her up out of the water once shed been born  ‘That’s who you are’ I said!

My son’s birth… my second…
My waters broke on the Thursday night just after midnight. I chose not to go into hospital to be checked but said if I wasn’t in labour by the morning I’d go in. I had no desire for an induced hospital birth and felt everything was fine. I went in to be checked and everything was fine. Again they wanted me to go into hospital but I didn’t see the need to. They told me the risk only increased further 92h after my waters had broken so I went home. It was a long stop start labour over 3 days. I think he was back to back and it took that time for him to turn. Once I was in labour it was pretty similar to my daughter birth story… other than he was 2lb heavier! When he was finally born, he was born with the membrane on him… it had only been my hind waters that had broken… so no risk to him.

I was glad to have them both at home. It felt like I’d honoured what was right for me. Although I’d never have done it if I’d felt I was causing them Amy risk. We were only 10 minutes from the hospital if is needed to go in at any point.
